Input Devices

A keyboard is an input device and it is used to input data into a PC by pressing the keys that are laid out on the keyboard. Most keyboards need a USB cable which is used to power up and use the keyboard. Once the user presses a key the computer records what they have typed so that if they are using the same software later then the computer can auto type some words after user has stopped typed, this saves times as the user wouldst have to type the whole word in. And the movement of the keys pressed is also recorded so that the user can see what they are typing on the screen. There are different keyboards, available for different occasions, e.g. a mechanical gaming keyboard would be best for gaming as there are programmable buttons on them and the keys are easy to press on. Another occasion may be travelling so a slim, small and light weight keyboard would be best as it would be more portable to use and move around with when travelling.

A mouse is another input device, it also uses a USB port up so that its available to use when operating the PC, like the keyboards, the computer also records the movement of the users mouse so that a cursor can be seen on the screen. Mouses can have different speeds and sensitivity depending on the style of mouse, as a higher DPI would be better for gaming so that the user can react quicker. But a simpler, basic mouse would not have a high sensitivity as its not specialized, its just a standard mouse, which is good for general use of a PC.

A microphone is also an input device, buts its for audio. This device plugs into the microphone input port on the back of the PC which is usually 3.5mm in size. The microphone converts an analogue sound wave in digital sound so that it can be heard by other people through the computer. The sound could be played back through an output device such as a speaker, or it could be edited by using software, then it could be used as a part for something. There are lots of different microphones that suit different people and occasions, they vary in sound quality, size and also styles, some can be seen on headsets instead of using an external mic so its great for gaming/ Skype calls.
