In operating systems, file management is used to organise and track files so that they are kept in the correct location and are secure. E.g. a hierarchical file system is a file management program that uses directories to organise files into a tree structure so that the files locations are clearly labelled and visible. Operating systems come with their own file management system but separate file manage systems can be bought.
