One type of utility software is security, this type of software can protect a PC or network from any incoming viruses or other harmful programs. An example of this type of software is called anti-virus software and the job of this software is to block the harmful program and then removed it so it will not affect the PC again. After this the software may scan the PC or network again to be sure that the harmful program has been removed. This software will then do regular scans to check for any more harmful programs that may have appeared. Operating systems can come with pre-loaded security software and tools that will be able to scan, detect and remove harmful programs.

An improvement in performance is a great thing to gain, the use of anti - virus software can improve performance as, if there arent any harmful files then the system will run a lot smoother because of the fact that there isn't anything in the system that is there to purposely affect and decrease the performance of the PC. Therefore it will check the system regularly to make sure that it is running smoothly and that nothing but non harmful files are in the PC.
Ant-virus software may also improve the performance of a PC, because if malware is removed by using anti - malware software then less programs and applications are being run and so the system is struggling as much with all the programs being run, therefore the overall performance of the PC's system will increase.

Firewalls are used to stop unauthorised programs being run and placed into the system, it also helps a lot with increasing the performance as all of the programs that are trying to get into the system or ones that are already in the system will not be able to as the firewall does these processes regularly and when they are needed so it well slow down the amount of processing power that is needed to run everything in the PC, including hardware. Because of this the performance will increase.

Encryption software also increases the performance of a PC because it is used to decrypt/ encrypt files by using a key so therefore the security of the data files will increase, because data cant just be read by the system. It has to be decyrpted which makes it not only safer but also increases the performance of a PC because less data is being transferred at once.
